Common Laptop Concerns

Laptops:
Laptop computers are wonderful.  I prefer the smaller, lighter variety that weigh less than 6 pounds, but the big 17" screens are nice too.

The main repair problem I see is the power cord plug breaking the power cord jack inside the computer.  You'll have a dead laptop because the power can't get to the computer or to the battery to charge it.  Sometimes you can wiggle the cord to make a connection, and the computer will work.  There is almost always a little light on the computer that indicates when the cord is making a connection, or the battery is receiving power, etc.  Watch for the little light as you plug, unplug, and wiggle the power cord plug.  You should know this light, and you should know if your power is getting to your computer.  In Windows, look for the little icon in the lower right of your screen that also indicates whether or not you are connected to your AC adapter.

Repairing the power cord jack inside the computer is very difficult.  I've soldered many laptop systems boards in the past, but I no longer take the time or risk to do so.  Instead, I send out the computer to a repair facility.
